Osama bin Laden Spotted!

Contrary to my previous post, Osama bin Laden has been spotted. Josh Marshall sighted him in this Web ad from the Republican National Committee:The point of the ad is to portray Democrats as soft on terror. That's right, if we elect Democrats, who knows what bin Laden might get away with.
Anyway,
some folks just knew he'd turn up in October.

I'm not sure that any particular partisan group has proposed an effective response to either bin Laden or radical Islam.

What I am sure of is what pervasive, unproductive fear-mongering can do. It paralyzes us, numbs our senses, and distorts our perceptions.

Please do not misunderstand--fear is a critical and potentially live-saving experience. If a train is coming towards us, fear will tell us to jump out of its way. That is good and proper, is it not? Too much fear, however, will leave us standing on the tracks, befuddled.

There's a book I've been reading online that's all about this called THE NEXT OSAMA (J. Acosta, www.jodere.com). It's fiction and it follows the trajectories of 4 people as they lost on a slipstream of media-disseminated fear.

I've heard it said that fear is the great motivator. But I have not seen that in recent history. And that is most unfortunate, mostly for us.
