Roy Blount, Jr. Defends the President

We've heard the story, here via the Guardian:
Asked by Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper what he considered to be his greatest triumph, President Bush replied: "I've experienced many great moments. It's hard for me to name the greatest." He went on: "I would say that the best moment of all came when I caught a seven-and-a-half pound perch while fishing on my lake."
On NPR's Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me, Roy Blount, Jr. spoke up on Bush's behalf:
I'd like to defend the president on this. I think he was right.

Yellow Perch

Perca flavescens

This species lives in schools in deeper water during the day and is known to move into shallower water at dusk to feed. It is also often harvested commercially in the US and Canada. Yellow perch spawn when the water is between 45 and 52 degrees and don't build nests or guard their young. They have also been known to go into water that contains little or no oxygen for short periods of time to feed on bloodworms.

Yellow Perch World Record is 4lbs 3oz - Bordentown, NJ

White Perch World Record is 4lbs 12oz - Messalonskee Lake, ME

It's worse than you think... in TX bass fishing is a religion. So for Bush to get the fish wrong proves he's out of touch; the good ol' boys must be snickering. Perch is what the boys catch down there. To confuse a perch with a bass is almost as bad as... well, confusing a lawyer with a quail.
